Controlled Burns
  1. Call the Stoughton Fire Dept (873-7218), the McFarland Fire Dept (838-3152), or the Cottage Grove Fire Department(839-4343) and register with them. Failure to follow these instructions or if the fire department is called will result in a $225 fine.

  2. Make sure it is a safe time to burn. Do not burn when conditions are overly dry or windy. Mornings are preferable to avoid bothering neighbors. You must have a water source at the burn site.

  3. Fires must be extinguished and cold within one half hour of sunset. This means no smoldering embers.

  4. Keep materials to be burned in small manageable piles no bigger than 4' x 4'.

  5. Be mindful of wind direction-please don't create a smoke nuisance for your neighbor.

  6. NEVER LEAVE THE FIRE UNTIL IT IS COMPLETELY OUT. YOU MUST ATTEND THE ENTIRE BURN.
