Controlled Burns

While burning is allowed in the town, the ordinance and rules below must be followed for  legal compliance  and safe burning  conditions. Failure to follow these instructions could result in a fine, or worse, the destruction of property and loss of life.

  1. Call the Stoughton Fire Dept (873-7218),  the McFarland Fire Dept (838-3152) or the Cottage Grove Fire Department (839-4343) and register with them.  You must let them know WHAT and WHEN you are burning. Each day of burning requires a separate registration. Leaving smoldering ashes counts as a day of burning. If the fire department is called to your property, regardless of whether they assist in putting out the fire or not, there will be a $225 fine.
  2. Make sure it is a safe time to burn. Do not burn when conditions are overly dry or windy. Mornings are preferred to avoid bothering neighbors.
  3. Fires must be completely extinguished within one half hour of sunset.
  4. Keep materials to be burned in small manageable piles no bigger than 4' x 4'.
  5. Be mindful of wind direction-please don't create a smoke nuisance for your neighbor.
  6. NEVER LEAVE THE FIRE UNTIL IT IS COMPLETELY OUT. You must be present near the fire, not merely on the property, for the entire burning time. SMOLDERING ASHES COUNT AS A BURNING FIRE.
