DOES YOUR MAILBOX COMPLY?
The Town of Pleasant Springs has adopted minimum standards for mailboxes
following the United States Postal Service guidelines for efficient delivery of
the mail and Wisconsin Department of Transportation standards for minimizing the
risk of damage or injury which could result from the collision of a motor
vehicle with an inappropriately constructed mailbox.
A recent survey of town residences found 158 properties with mailboxes out of
compliance with the current town ordinance.
Please take a moment to match your mailbox with the following list of
ordinance requirements:
- Every mailbox shall be mounted on a post (no more than 4 inches a side or
in diameter if wood, no more than 1 ½ inches in diameter if a steel pipe).
- The post shouldn’t be buried more than 24 inches below ground surface
and may not be set in concrete or on a base plate. This includes flower
boxes, planters and brick or wood enclosures of any kind.
- Every mailbox shall be attached securely to its support post.
- Only two mailboxes may be mounted on a single support
post. If more than two boxes must be installed, the posts should be
placed 3 feet apart and the support post a minimum of 24 inches from the
edge of the roadway pavement.
- The mailbox should be mounted on its post at 42 to 48 inches above the
road shoulder.
- The front of the mailbox should not be suspended over the road shoulder, but not
set back more than 8 inches from the edge.
If your mailbox fails to meet any of these requirements, PLEASE make the necessary changes
as soon as possible. Please do not place anything but a legally constructed
mailbox in the road right-of-way. The right-of-way extends thirty-three feet
from the center of the road.
Existing mailboxes deemed to pose an immediate danger to motorist's safety may
be removed at the direction of the Town Board, after the owner has been notified
and afforded the opportunity to discuss the matter with the Board.
Should a mailbox violate any of these standards, the Town will notify the
owner, noting the specific problem and giving thirty days to correct the
problem. If the violation is not corrected, the Town will either start action to
enforce the ordinance or remove the mailbox.
As we prepare for winter, please remember:
The Town is responsible to compensate the owner of a mailbox up to $25.00
ONLY if the mailbox is damaged or destroyed by contact with the snowplow blade. The Town
is not responsible for damage from the impact of snow pushed against a mailbox.
Please call 205-9169 to report a mailbox that has been hit by a snowplow blade.
Town staff will investigate the situation and appropriate compensation will be
made.
